A Columbus, Ohio police officer has died after being shot by a suspect while working with other officers to serve an arrest warrant, police say. A Virginia State Police trooper has died after being shot during a gunfight inside a Richmond, Virginia Greyhound bus station, police say. VSP says at approximately 2:40 p.m. Thursday March 31, 2016, Virginia State Police Trooper Chad P. Dermyer approached a man just inside the front doors of the bus station. Authorities in Tigertown Texas say a state trooper has died on patrol after crashing his car into a tree in North Texas. A Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman says that Trooper Jeffrey Nichols is the first state trooper to die on duty in 2016. The department says the 27-year-old trooper lost control of his patrol car in rural Lamar County and died at the scene. The Howard County Sheriff’s Department says two of its deputies were confronted by gunfire while trying to serve an arrest warrant. They say officers returned fire, but two deputies were wounded during the exchange. They say Deputy Carl Koontz died from his wounds. El Paso Police say Officer David Ortiz has died, just days after being critically injured in a multi-vehicle crash. It happened March 10, 2016, when Ortiz was stopped at a red light. Police say an unnamed 45-year-old Hispanic man struck the police motorcycle, causing Ortiz to be thrown off, and also caused a chain reaction involving several other vehicles and caused a fire.
