A woman is caught on camera stealing a ring from a corpse that was on display at a Texas funeral home. Odessa Police were called out to the Sunsety Memorial Gardens and Funeral home. Police say it was a theft from a deceased person.

Surveillance footage shared by Odessa Police showed the unidentified suspect appearing to twist the finger of 88-year-old Lois Hicks, who was lying inside an open casket at the funeral home in Odessa on Friday afternoon. The suspect reportedly tore off part of Hicks’ skin during the theft. Police say that the suspect took off in a red or maroon four-door Saturn vehicle.

I can’t believe someone would be that low,” Hicks’ grieving daughter Vel McKee, who’d left her mother’s side for just 15 minutes when the theft occurred, told the Odessa American Online. “It makes me sick to my stomach. Horrible. I hope they catch her.” Family members say they don’t know the suspect.

Family members say they had stepped away from their dead mother for 15 minutes, when the woman came up and stole the rings. McKee and her sister were about the touch up their mother’s makeup and hair when they noticed that the rings were gone.

Bill Vallie, the funeral home’s general manager, said surveillance cameras captured several shots of the wanted woman, her vehicle and license plate. He’s says she’s seen on camera asking where they restrooms were, but instead went into the room where the casket was.

Police posted this on Facebook, “The suspect is described as a heavy set white female wearing a brown long sleeve sweater, black sweat pants and black sandals. This is currently being investigated as a State Jail Felony. No arrests have been made and the investigation continues. Anyone with information in reference to this incident is encouraged to contact OPD or Odessa Crime Stoppers at 432-333-TIPS.”
