Man Attempts Robbery, Learns his Victim is a Cop

A robbery suspect picked the wrong man to mess with. Police say a Tennessee man has been arrested after authorities say he tried to rob a Knoxville police officer. The officer police was sitting in an unmarked police car. The Knoxville News-Sentinel says according to an incident report, the officer was sitting in the driver’s seat of his car in a parking lot. Police say 22-year-old Brandon A. Williams came around the back side of the car and opened the passenger door and demanded money.

It was reported that the officer “confronted (Williams) about his actions, (Williams) paused and then stated ‘I’m here for the money,’ and attempted to further enter the (officer’s) vehicle,” according to the arrest documents. Police say the officer then told the suspect he was a police officer, drew his weapon, and gave (Williams) verbal commands to get down on the ground. Police say Williams then tried to flee but was caught after a short distance.

Police say the officer her tried to rob caught up to him. Police say Williams aggressively resisted arrest. They say he ripped the police badge from the officer’s neck, breaking it, and cussing at him. Police say Williams was detained, and he waived his Miranda rights. They say under video and audio recording he gave a full confession, stating that he intended to rob the officer, according to WATE.

Williams has been charged with attempted robbery, assault, evading arrest and resisting, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held on a $17,000 bond.

This wasn’t Williams first run-in with the law recently, according to WATE. He was taken into custody for a prior charge of a hit and run. Police say he tried to run over a woman at an apartment complex and damaged a Toyota Camry. Police say he was pulled over for a traffic stop and failed a sobriety test. Police also say that a K9 officer found a hypodermic needle in the passenger side door of the car Williams was driving. They say Williams told officers that the needle was used to ingest meth.
