A Houston deputy constable was shot multiple times in the back during an ambush, authorities say. Houston Police spokesman Kese Smith says Constable Alden Clopton was approached from behind and shot six times outside of a convenience store. Police say that he was standing next to another deputy constable’s vehicle at the time of the shooting at 11:20 p.m. on Wednesday.

Dr. Joseph Love treated the Harris County Precinct 7 Deputy Constable. Dr. Love says the deputy constable has six wounds to his abdomen and chest areas. He added that the constable is doing quite well. He said some bullets were not removed because doing so could cause additional injury and leaving them in should pose no problem for Clopton and he should make a full recovery.

Authorities say that he was wearing a bullet proof vest at the time and that the vest likely saved Clopton’s life, Constable May Walker said.

At the time of the shooting Clopton had been called out to help another constable during a traffic stop, police say. Authorities say Clopton was standing outside the other constable’s vehicle, when the shooting occurred.

ABC 13 reports that investigators questioned a man Thursday fitting the description of a gunman who authorities say ambushed Constable Clopton. Police say the man showed up at a nearby fire station following the shooting. Houston police spokesman Kese Smith released no other information on this person or what he told fire station personnel. Smith says the man has not been arrested or charged but says that authorities were not actively looking for anyone else.

Clopton has been on the force 11 years. He is married and has five children, said Pamela Greenwood, spokeswoman for the Harris County Precinct 7 constable’s office to ABC 13. He comes from a law enforcement family. He has three brothers who are law officers, and Walker says Clopton’s wife is a Harris County sheriff’s deputy.
