Texas officials say a woman has confessed to putting her toddler in an oven, burning the child. Witnesses told deputies that the mother told them she had done the deed, and then Somervell County Sheriff’s Office investigators went to the home. They say the child had appeared to have suffered burns. They say 35-year-old Tasha Shontell Hatcher admitted she placed her two-year-old child in the oven.

Authorities took the child to a hospital in Fort Worth before she was transported by air ambulance to the Parkland Memorial Hospital Burn Center in Dallas. Texas Child Protective Services spokeswoman Marissa Gonzales said the child is now in protective custody and will be placed in foster care when released from the hospital.

Arutro Villa says he lives directly next to Hatcher. They live about about three miles outside of Glen Rose. “They always seemed playful together,” he said to WFAA.com. He says as he mowed his lawn one evening, he says he noticed loud music and Hatcher acting strangely, making gestures and signs. “It was unusual,” he said.

Hatcher has been charged with serious bodily harm to a child, a first-degree felony charge, and she is being held on a $300,000 bond. No information on her attorney has been made available.

Court records show Hatcher, of Glen Rose, has a history of drug problems and problems with police. She was last arrested in Dallas in 2008 for drug possession and driving with a suspended license.

Family members of the little girl said online that the child suffered burns to 60% of her body. They are asking for prayers and donations to help with hospital costs.

The case remains under investigation by the Somervell County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Rangers and Child Protective Services.
